When was the last time you ran through the lab safety rules with your students?  Safety is essential in educational settings where, more often than not, science practicals require handling hazardous chemicals, using specialised equipment, and conducting complex experiments.

Given that students are still in their formative years, these activities can pose an added risk to their wellbeing and require extra care. In this case, it’s up to the science technician to check that the environment stays safe.

1. No Snacks or Drinks in the Lab:

Bringing food or drinks into the lab is not allowed to minimise the risk of accidents involving hazardous materials.

2.  Use of PPE

Make sure to wear suitable PPE when instructed , this may include safety glasses and/or gloves. These items are vital for maintaining safety during laboratory work.

3. Dress for Safety:

When you're in the lab, dress appropriately! Wear long trousers, tuck in your ties, wear a lab coat/ apron if instructed, and shoes that cover your whole foot. Avoid jewellery.

4. Clean Hands, Safe Hands:

After handling anything hazardous, wash your hands with soap and water. Do this before you leave the lab as well. It's a simple step that keeps you and others safe.

5. Follow Directions Closely:

Pay close attention to instructions and follow them carefully. This helps you avoid mistakes and ensures that everyone in the lab stays safe. If you're not sure about something, don't hesitate to ask for clarification. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

6. Maintain A Focused Environment:

Avoid distracting or startling anyone working in the lab. It's important to maintain a calm and focused atmosphere to ensure the safety of all individuals.

7. Use Equipment Correctly

Only use equipment for its designated purpose and only how instructed to prevent accidents and maintain a productive work environment.

8. Know Your Emergency Procedures

Familiarise yourself with the emergency exits – if unsure, ask your teacher. In the event of an emergency, leave your belongings behind and exit the room safely. Follow your teacher's lead and stay calm.
