Six years ago, a surprising survey revealed that many people, including school leaders and the general public, didn't understand what science technicians do on a daily basis. This led to a much-needed change. Each year, SLS Select Education is a proud sponsor of Techognition, an event that brings into spotlight the important role of school technicians.

This year, to celebrate your hard work and dedication, we also put together a short article, something you can easily share when someone asks about your role.

So … What Do Science Technicians Actually Do?

Science Technicians are the backbone of school labs, ensuring that students have a safe and efficient environment in which they conduct experiments. From meticulous planning and setup to vigilant monitoring and cleanup, their role is indispensable.

1. Preparation and Planning:

Before students step into the lab, technicians work diligently to ensure everything is in order. This involves reviewing experiment protocol, inventory, organising, and checking all necessary equipment; reviewing safety protocols and ensuring safety equipment is readily available.

2. Setting Up & Supporting Experiments:

Technicians strategically position workstations to optimise the space and facilitate group work. They assemble and test the experimental setups, making sure each component is in working order. While students conduct their experiments, technicians remain on hand to offer support with troubleshooting and monitoring safety.

3. Post-Experiment Clean-Up:

Once the experiments conclude, technicians shift into the clean-up phase. They disassemble experimental setups, ensuring components are stored properly. Hazardous materials are disposed of according to established protocols to ensure the lab remains safe. Technicians restock consumables and replace any used or damaged equipment.

4. Lab Maintenance:

Beyond the immediate requirements of an experiment, technicians are also responsible for the overall maintenance of the lab through regular inspections and ensuring timely repair or replacement of faulty lab equipment.

5. The Work That Never stops:

Science technicians are the ultimate multitaskers. Beyond their designated roles, these unsung heroes often find themselves knee-deep in tasks far beyond the realm of their job descriptions. From fixing faulty equipment to assisting with paperwork and even stepping in to help with teaching, science technicians embody the spirit of versatility and dedication.
