The JEM preserved rats do not contain formalin so are safer to dissect than ordinary embalmed ones and don't smell as much. The preservative is safe and non-toxic and does not form hazardous waste or represent a biological risk. With unused ones if they have been stored for a long time the preservative may pool in the corners, the bag needs to be opened and the preservative washed to waste with plenty of water down the sink.
