The combination of low cost, ease of use and high performance make the Mystrica colorimeter an ideal instrument for use as class sets, with small groups or for individual projects. The colorimeter can be used as a stand alone instrument to obtain readings of absorbance or transmittance of blue, green or red light, connected to a PC using the USB cable supplied, using Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to a tablet, phone or PC, and with either test-tubes or cuvettes.
- Power source:
- 4 x AA batteries (supplied)
- The power switches off after 2 minutes (Mystrica 2.0, 30 seconds with older versions) to conserve the batteries unless the unit is connected to a PC, tablet or phone
- The calibration values are retained so you just need to press the power switch again to continue working
- When the unit is connected through the USB cable supplied to either a PC or to a mains USB socket the power is drawn through the cable, the unit stays on permanently and the batteries are conserved
- Light sources:
- Three LED light sources emitting red (~630nm), green (~525nm) or blue (~465nm) light, the colour is selected by pressing the RGB button
- Absorbance/transmittance:
- You can choose to measure either absorbance or transmittance by pressing the A/T button, the display indicates which has been chosen
- Transmittance measures the light energy passing through the sample and is expressed as percent (T%)
- Absorbance is a logarithmic function (A = 2 – log T%) and will usually be the preferred unit since absorbance is directly proportional to the concentration of the absorbing substance (Beer’s Law)
- Display:
- 3 1/2 digit LCD
- Absorbance readings are shown from .000 to 1.999, on the screen of a PC, tablet or phone readings are displayed from 0.000 to 3.000 and negative values will also be shown
- Transmittance is displayed from 100.0 to 0.1%
- Display also shows the colour of light selected (RGB) and whether absorbance or transmittance is being measured (A/T)
- Calibration
- To calibrate: insert a cuvette containing the solution of lowest absorbance (usually water), press the CAL button, the display will show either 100.0 (transmittance) or .000 (absorbance)
- Calibration values are retained when the colorimeter switches off but it is a good idea to recalibrate fairly frequently, calibration values may change if the ambient temperature changes so exposure to strong sunlight or other sources of heat should be avoided
- The colorimeter is sensitive to a change of 0.1% of the transmitted light
- The app 'Mystrica Colorimeter' is free to download from the Apple or Google Play app stores. It can be used to:
- Collect results as a continuous data stream at predetermined time intervals
- Collect individual readings (separate events)
- Display results as tables or graphs
- Obtain best fit lines from graph data points
- Save results
