Christmas Fundraising for Rainbows

Every year instead of sending Christmas cards to customers, suppliers and colleagues, we make a donation to Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. This is embraced by our fantastic family of colleagues, and we are proud to support the work of this incredible organisation with a corporate donation. Combined with staff donations, we will be able to contribute hundreds of pounds to help Rainbows continue their great work.

As the East Midlands’ only hospice for children and young people, the charity brightens the short lives of the children and young people who come to Rainbows. Rainbows want them to have fun and make special memories. They are also there to support their loved ones through the most difficult times of their lives.

Happy 33rd Launch Anniversary to the Hubble Space Telescope!

Originally conceived in the 1940s as the Large Space Telescope, Hubble's launch on April 24, 1990 marked decades of planning and research.

Despite some initial setbacks and issues with the telescope's optics, Hubble has since become one of the most productive and influential scientific instruments of all time.

Over the past three decades, Hubble has made countless groundbreaking observations, revolutionising our understanding of the universe. From measuring the expansion rate of the universe to discovering dark energy, Hubble has contributed to some of the most significant scientific discoveries of the 21st century.

Hubble has also captured stunning images of galaxies, nebulae, and other celestial objects that have inspired people around the world. The telescope's ability to see deep into space has allowed us to witness incredible events such as the birth of stars and the collision of galaxies.

Happy Birthday to Caroline Hershel

Caroline Herschel was a pioneering astronomer who achieved numerous notable accomplishments throughout her career.

Born in Germany in 1750, Herschel moved to England to live with her brother, William Herschel, who was also an astronomer. Together, they made many important discoveries, including the observation of several comets and the identification of many nebulae and star clusters.

Caroline Herschel was also the first woman to receive a salary for her scientific work, and the first woman to discover a comet, which she did in 1786.

Her contributions to astronomy were widely recognized in her lifetime, and she was awarded numerous honours, including a Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society.

Caroline Herschel's achievements paved the way for future generations of women in science.

Martin's Tech Guide on Domestic vs Laboratory Glass Washers

What’s the difference between a laboratory glassware  washer and a domestic dishwasher?

I’ve been asked this many times myself, usually by management, in my previous role as a science technician – and it’s a reasonable question to ask, when considering departmental budget allocations for the academic year.

A domestic dishwasher is designed specifically for domestic use (cutlery, crockery, etc) and is NOT corrosive resistant.

As soon as you use a domestic dishwasher for scientific equipment you void the warranty – and reduce its life expectancy and efficiency (in my experience 1–2 years of life).
